MUSICFAN, LIVE REVIEW
they may well be the best brass band on the planet

  • FROOTS - "No wonder that over the years this band has walked away with every available prize"
  • SONGLINES - "Supremely rich, varied and inventive Serbian brass from a true musical thinker. It really is the best band in the land."
  • ROOTSWORLD - "Strutting vitality.menacing.soaring.fundament rocking.outlandish.impossible virtuosity."
  • JAZZ REVIEW - "Delightfully disorienting, scintillatingly surreal, like an aural mirage of something strange and beautiful. You think there's nothing "new" and/or unusual to listen to "out there"? Guess again."
  • ALL ABOUT JAZZ - "The music ended with the crowd and band collapsing from near exhaustion in a sweaty "It's been a long time since I had one this good" bliss."
  • THE NEW YORK TIMES - "There was a worthy ringer on the bill: the Boban Markovic Orkestar from Serbia. Its songs were pure propulsion: drumbeats as relentless as a machine and horn arrangements that could sound like a silver-toned chorale, a soul horn section or a choreographed brawl. Solos sprinted through the melee. It was dance music that was almost brutal in his gleeful efficiency."
  • ROOTSWORLD - North American football marching bands at every level could learn a thing or three from Markovic and company. One could go on, as this is music whose endurance is both epic and assured. Consider son Marko's cameo trumpet appearance on "Roditeljska Sreca," whose melancholy audacity offers resonant aural evidence that the Markovic musical legacy is in good hands, putting a new generation of horn players on planetary notice. "Now dat's a trumpet!
  • RADIO MULTIKULTI - Simultaneously bombastic and bitter-sweet, the brass band steamroller through arrangements of Serbian gypsy music along with a few oddities thrown in for good measure - like their rousing rendition of 'Hava Naguila'.
  • PASSION-MUSIC.CO.UK - Berlin Boban Markovic has won the prestigious Serbian Dragacevo Festival, and his remarkable instrumental knowledge has added new dimensions to Serbian brass band history.
  • JAZZ REVIEW - "It's loud, rhythmic, uproarious, in-your-face party music - imagine a highly-caffeinated edition of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy vacationing in the thin-air mountains of Peru with a Mexican Mariachi band playing Gipsy folk tunes."
  • GLOBAL RHYTHM - "This record is dangerous in the way the spring is dangerous: its exuberance owerwhelms the listener and demands:"You must change your life or end it."
  • HERALD TIMES - "Some music is for the heed, some is for the feet and some is for the heart. The Boban Markovic Orkestar plays music for the whole body"
  • NOW TORONTO - "The Word Funky is not often associated with traditional Serbian Roma music. At least, not until trumpeter Boban Markovic assembled his badass brass band and began hooking up a storm."
  • ROOTS WORLD, USA - "Able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, the Markovic Orkestar has moments of pure possession, but an ear for the extraordinary remains ever grounded in tight arrangement and superb musicianship."
