La "missione" del maestro della musica turca Burhan Öçal, è quella di costruire ponti tra le varie culture musicali. E' cresciuto in una famiglia musicalmente molto attiva. L'attività musicale di Burhan Öçal è influenzata dal serail della Turkia e dalla musica folk. così come dalla musica neoclassica turca. Iniziando la sua carriera come musicista autodidatta, Burhan Öçal era già ben noto come percussionista professionale ad un'età giovanissima in Turchia. Era quello il periodo quando si interesso della musica occidentale.

Gli strumenti musicali di Burhan Öçal sono vari quanto la sua musica. Suona non soltanto qualunque genere di strumenti a percussione ed è un padrone della sua arte su percussione turca quali il darbuka ed i kös , ma è inoltre un esperto di una grande varietà di strumenti a corda turchi quali diwan-saz, tanbur ed oud. Accompagna la sua propria musica con una una voce potente ed espressiva.

Musicalmente parlando, Burhan Öçal supera i limiti del tempo e della cultura. L'artista non fugge via dal confronto con alcun genere di stile musicale quali jazz o musica classica. In tutti i suoi esperimenti con la musica, tenta sempre d'ottenere la sincerità e la genuinità assoluta della sua arte. La tradizione turca costituisce la base di creatività di Burhan Öçal e la sua personale espressione musicale.

La carriera in occidente di Burhan Öçal è iniziata con la sua prima apparizione pubblica al festival di poesia de Zurigo nel 1979. Da allora, ha dato concerti solo dappertutto. Nel 1986, entra con successo nel mondo della musica classica europea: duetta con il pianista classico Maria Joao Pires e assieme al chitarrista classico Elliot Fisk. Nelle loro imprese musicali reciproche, i musicisti aprono una nuova dimensione della combinazione strumentale. Il suono ed il ritmo vengono a contatto in un tentativo eccitante ed intransigente ad unire gli elementi vari della musica.

Nel 1992, Burhan Öçal partecipa con il famoso tastierista Joe Zawinul e la sua prima orchestra sinfonica e continua la collaborazione fino al 1997. Inoltre, nel mese di dicembre del 1997, comincerà a lavorare con il pianista Peter Waters al progetto dell'interpretazione a piano e percussione delle "Variazioni di Goldberg" di Bach.

Nel 1995, Burhan Öçal riceve il primo premio "German Record Critics" per la sua registrazione "Gypsy Rumba" con Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, il gruppo che ha fondato in 1996. Con lo stesso gruppo, incide un altro album nel 1997 "Sultan's Secret Door" e riceve ancora una volta il "German Record Critics Award". Ha ricevuto inoltre, nel 1996, per la sua registrazione della musica serail "Jardin Ottoman", il "Choc", premio di "Le Monde de la Musique" in Francia.

Burhan Öçal, realizza un nuovo album di musica oriental-funk con il bassista americano Jamaaladeen Tacuma nell'estate del 1997 in Turchia con la Pozitif Productions.

Il suo debutto negli Stati Uniti avviene nel mese di febbraio 1998 trasferendosi per diverso tempo per le prestazioni con Eliot Fisk. Subito dopo, ritorna negli USA in tour con George Gruntz Band, partecipando al Montreal Jazz Festival in Vancouver, al Ravinia Festival e al Knitting Factory in New York City. Altri punti culminanti dei suoi impegni recenti hanno incluso due prestazioni al Womad festival e innumerevoli altri in giro per il mondo.
