Less than two years later
she was to achieve commercial success with a strongly pop-oriented album:
"För Älskad - Too Loved". A high chart placing made her a star in Sweden
overnight.
Soon after that Viktoria
signed a contract with Blue Note. "White Russian" was released in 1997,
and was the first album by a Scandinavian artist on this legendary label!
With this CD the great-great-granddaughter of the famous Russian writer
was to attract attention well beyond the borders of her Swedish homeland.
She wrote the material
together with her compatriot Esbjörn Svensson. As well as producing
the album, the pianist appeared on it with his now celebrated trio e.s.t..
Soon afterwards Viktoria Tolstoy accompanied e.s.t. on their first extended
German tour.
Subsequently Viktoria
was able to perform with some jazz legends such as Ray Brown and McCoy
Tyner, and to give concerts worldwide as well as develop further her
career in Sweden.
In 2000 the album "Blame
It On My Youth" was released on which she sang a selection of jazz standards
accompanied by her quartet.
At the end of 2003 Viktoria
Tolstoy became an exclusive ACT Music & Vision artist. The release of
the solo album "Shining On You" in February 2004 coincided with a major
"Rising Stars" live tour through Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
Again all the music for that album was written especially for her by
none other than Esbjörn Svensson, who in the meantime has become a huge
star in the jazz world in his own right with his trio e.s.t. and went
straight into the pop charts of her home country Sweden. For the first
single "Upside Out" from the album a video clip was produced that got
aired in various countries in Europe and with the second single "Summer
Calling" Viktoria made several television appearances in television
shows in France, Germany and Sweden.
Viktoria Tolstoy is
at the age of 29 already a highly celebrated and respected international
jazz vocalist and her numerous success stories are all a product of
this explosive natural supertalent. Viktoria has never taken a single
singing class thus she also owns that little perfect difference that
delivers her clearly strong and wonderfully untamed, vibrant sound.
She´ll capture the moment on any given occasion and will outperform
herself from one grand evening to the next.
Viktoria reaches all
the way and her colorful, spontaneous persona will by all
means make one forget
to breathe for not only a short moment.Viktoria
is already on the very top, yet once again aiming up.
With her new and upcoming album "Shining On
You" she brings herself to the next level. Assisted by the likes of
Jazz greats Esbjörn Svensson, Toots Thielemans and Nils Landgren she
now brings us this balance act masterpiece of fingertip magic.
Viktoria has been saluted by media wherever
she has landed since she first grabbed that microphone, and rest assure,
this show will go on. We suggest you buckle up. Expect a lot.
Yes, Viktorias great great grandfather was
Leo Tolstoj, the russian author.
